Biography

 

Igor Vlahović was born in Zagreb in 1965, where he earned his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees at the Joint Study of Geology of the University of Zagreb (1989, 1993), and PhD at the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering of the University of Zagreb.

From 1990 to 2006 he was enrolled with the Croatian Geological Survey, where his main scope of interest was work on the Geological Map of the Republic of Croatia in 1:50.000 scale in Istria, islands of Cres, Krk, Lošinj, Mljet, Lastovo and Vis, as well as on Pelješac, Biokovo and Ćićarija.

From 2006 he is employed by the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering of the University of Zagreb as assistant professor, from 2007 to 2012 as associate professor, from 2012 as full professor and from 2018 as tenured full professor.

He is married and father of two great kids.

He was coordinator and reviewer of Croatian contribution to the Geological Map of Europe 1:5 M.

He is member of the National Commission for the Stratigraphic Nomenclature since 2009.

Igor Vlahović collaborated on several scientific projects funded by the Ministry of Science, Education and Sport of the Republic of Croatia, and at the moment he is collaborator at the project 'Dinaric Karst: Geological Evolution, Mineral Resources, Paleosols and Soils’ (Principal Investigator prof.dr.sc. Goran Durn) and Principal Investigator at the project ‘Microfossil Assemblages in Carbonate Deposits of the Karst Dinarids’.

He collaborated in the project ‘Geological Map of the Konavle Area in 1:50000 Scale – Necessary Precondition for the Sustainable Development’, funded by National Scientific Foundation of the Republic of Croatia, as well as on two projects funded by the Croatian Science Foundation (2016–2019): ‘Cretaceous Geodynamic Evidences in the Dinarides and Pannonian Basin’ (PI Prof. Dražen Balen, Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb) and ‘Velebit Top to Bottom – Multidisciplinary Research linking Seismological Data and Tectonics in the Mt. Velebit Region’ (PI Prof. Marijan Herak, Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb).

Currently he is collaborator on a project funded by the Croatian Science Foundation (2020–2023): ‘Western Istrian Anticline as an Ideal Natural Laboratory for the Study of the

Regional Unconformities in Carbonate Rocks’ (PI Prof. Goran Durn, Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering).

 

He was leader of Croatian scientific groups on four international scientific projects:

  • ‘Permian-Triassic Mass Extinction in an Ancestor of the Adriatic Carbonate Platform, Croatia’ (University of Lausanne, Switzerland);
  • ‘Comparison of Jurassic–Cretaceous Sedimentary Successions in the Eastern Alps (Austria) and Dinarides (Croatia): Palaeogeography, Geodynamics and Evolution’ (University of Leoben, Austria);
  • ‘Palaeogeographic History of the Adria Plate: Palaeomagnetic Reconstruction’ (Polish Academy of Sciences, Poland);
  • ‘Paleomagnetyzm i historia termiczna skał permu, triasu i jury rejonu Dynarydów chorwackich, a ewolucja paleogeograficzna i geodynamiczna płyty adriatyckiej’ (Polish Academy of Sciences, Poland).

He was actively collaborating on two international scientific projects:

  • ‘Ricostruzione paleoceanografica di eventi di perturbazione globale nel Giurassico inferiore tetideo tramite stratigrafia geochimica ad alta risoluzione’ (University of Palermo, Italy);
  • ‘Sulphatic Evaporite Mélanges: Basic Principles and Application to the Eastern Alps and Dinarides’ (University of Salzburg, Austrija).

Igor Vlahović gave invited lectures in Austria (Montanuniversität Leoben, 2008), Poland (University of Warsaw, 2007; Polish Academy of Sciences Krakow, 2012), Spain (University of Granada, 2016), and USA (The University of Kansas, Lawrence KS, 2005 and 2016; Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University – VirginiaTech, Blacksburg VA, 2005; Grand Valley State University, Grand Rapids MI, 2013, Smith College, Northampton MA, 2017).

 

Major Commercial Projects

Igor Vlahović collaborated on several major projects for commercial purposes – basic geological investigations for tunnels Mala Kapela (5.8 km) and Sv. Rok (5.7 km), projects for petroleum industry (geological profiles Senj–Ogulin and Ogulin–Karlovac, interpretation of Upper Jurassic sedimentary environments in the Gorski Kotar area, study of depositional environments in the Mudawara oil field, Syria), hydrogeological investigations of the island of Mljet and exploration of dimension stone in Istria and Dalmatia, seismotectonic investigations for the accumulation Križ potok, Port of Ploče and accumulation Ponikve, as well as basic geological investigation for National Parks (Northern Velebit, Paklenica, Plitvička jezera) and Parks of Nature (Biokovo).

He was Principal Investigator on several major projects for commercial purposes – basic geological investigations for tunnels Ćićarija (12 km) and Vratnik (4.2 km), exploration of limestones for fillers for the Lhoist Company (Belgium), basic geological investigations for seven sections of the Zagreb–Split–Dubrovnik highway, hydrogeological investigations of the Jezerane area, projects for petroleum industry (geological profile Karlobag–Korenica and study of the petroleum-geological system of the Upper Jurassic rocks in Dalmatia and Lika), as well as basic geological investigations for the Mala Ravninščica retention in Hrvatsko Zagorje and basic geological investigation for Parks of Nature Učka and Kamenjak.

 

Editorial Activity

Igor Vlahović was editor of 19 books, technical editor of five books and reviewer of two books.

He reviewed papers for several journals including Acta Geologica Polonica, Bulletin of Engineering Geology and the Environment, Carnet de Geologie, Cartography and Geoinformation, Catena, Cretaceous Research, Facies, Geologia Croatica, Journal of Petroleum Geology, Mediterranean Geoscience Reviews, Palaeo Palaeo Palaeo, PALAIOS and The Journal of Alpine Geology.

From 1991 to 1992 he was assistant to the editor-in-chief of the journal Geologia Croatica, from 1993 to 2002 he was managing editor, from 2002 to 2008. he was together with dr. sc. Ivo Velić editor-in-chief, and since 2008 he is a member of the Editorial Board of Geologia Croatica.

He was member of the Editorial Board of the journal European Science Editing (2005–2007, United Kingdom).

He was member of the Editorial Board of The Journal of Alpine Geology (2006–2008, Austria).

Igor Vlahović is an Associate Editor in the journal PALAIOS (USA) since 2006.

Since 2019 he is a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Mediterranean Geoscience Reviews (published by Springer).

Since 2019 he is an Associate Editor in the journal Carnets de Geologie (France).

 

Membership in Scientific Societies and Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts

Igor Vlahović is full member of Croatian Geological Society, Scientific Committee for Petroleum of HAZU, IUGS Global Sedimentary Geology Programme – Working Group 4, International Association of Sedimentologists (IAS), Geological Society of America (GSA) and The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

From 2007 to 2010 he was national correspondent of the International Association of Sedimentologists (IAS), and since 2010 he is a member of the IAS Council. Since 2008 he is a member of the Board of the Section for Geology, Geophysics and Geochemistry Scientific Committee for Petroleum of HAZU. Since 2016 he is president of the Scientific Council for Remote Sensing of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

From 2011 to 2013 he was member of the Managing Board, and from 2016 to 2017 he was a vicepresident of the Croatian Geological Society.

In 2006 he was elected as an associate member, and in 2016 as a full member – Fellow of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

 

Activities at Faculty and University

From 2009 to 2013 Igor Vlahović was appointed as a vice-dean for science and international cooperation at the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering of the University of Zagreb, president of the Postgraduate Study Committee, president of the Faculty Commission for Academic Promotion, coordinator for Erasmus programme and deputy member of the Council for Natural Sciences of the University of Zagreb. From 2011 to 2014 he was a member of the Board for PhD Programs of the University of Zagreb.

From 2019 to 2020 he was appointed as a vice-dean for science and international cooperation at the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering, president of Postgraduate Study Committee, Development Committee and Science Committee, as well as a member of the Committee for Undergraduate Studies of the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering.

Since 2017 he was a member of the Council for Natural Sciences of the University of Zagreb, and since 2021 he is a deputy member.

Since 2014 he is external associate at the Department of Communication and Space Technologies of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, University of Zagreb.
